Mo Farah, the Double Olympic Champion since London 2012 for the distances of 5000 meters and 10000 meters has registered a time of 27.47.04. Is this good enough to land him a spot on Great Britain’s Tokyo 2020 Olympics team? Let’s take a look.

The last lifeline for Tokyo 2020

On June 05, 2021, after a disappointing finish in a 10000m qualifier for the British Team, Mo Farah had his last lifeline at the British Championships on Friday, June 25, 2021. The Olympic qualifier of 27.28.00 for 10000 meters was out of reach of Mo Farah as he clocked 27.47.04. These 19 seconds put the double Olympic Champion, Mo Farah, out of contention to defend his 10000m title at Tokyo 2020.

“There’s no excuse in terms of conditions – it is what it is. I genuinely thought I’d come out here, get the time and then go back to the training camp.”, said Farah in an on-track interview after the race at Manchester, Great Britain.

Then What is next for Mo Farah? Can he qualify through World Rankings?

It is a well-known fact that to compete at the Olympics, an athlete either hits the qualifying mark for the event or ranks high enough in the World Rankings table to earn a spot at the Olympics. At the moment, Mo Farah is ranked 53rd for 10,000 meters. The number of athletes running in men’s 10,000 meters

at the Olympics by the World Rankings is Zero. So, even if Mo Farah ranks in the top 10 in the World for the event, he will not be able to qualify. Since 10,000 meters at the Olympics are run as a straight final, there are only 27 spots available. All the spots have already been filled by the athletes who qualified by time. So no Mo at the 10000 meters final at Tokyo 2020.

Then, Can Mo Farah compete in the Marathon at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics?

The straightforward answer to that is a No. But why? Because Ben Connor, Callum Hawkins, and the winner of the 2021 British Marathon Trials, Chris Thompson have already been named by the British Athletics for the Tokyo Marathon. So, no Mo for Tokyo 2020. I hope Mo Farah continues to race on the road and meet his future goal of running a competitive world-class Marathon.
