Singh’s 10.09 showed that the raw performance ceiling exists—and that it was good enough to rank seventh in this first round. Glasgow showed that the system must now develop his ability to access something close to that ceiling more reliably.

Sport-psychology research describes performance under pressure as complex rather than universally harmful. Some athletes interpret elevated arousal as readiness; others experience distraction or begin consciously monitoring a movement that normally operates automatically.

Again, none of this establishes that Singh experienced a psychological collapse. It explains why coaches must train competition execution alongside speed, strength and mechanics.

What Must Change Before the Next Major Championship?

  1. Build repeatability, not only one-race brilliance. The goal should be a cluster of performances near 10.15–10.20, rather than relying on one exceptional 10.09 result.
  2. Race internationally more often. Frequent exposure reduces the novelty of foreign travel, call rooms, strong opposition and unfamiliar competition routines.
  3. Simulate championship pressure. Training should include call-room delays, one-attempt race rehearsals, consequence-based starts and sessions performed after controlled waiting periods.
  4. Use a stable pre-performance routine. Warm-up timing, block cues, breathing, attentional focus and the final minutes before the race should be rehearsed until they remain consistent under disruption.
  5. Review the complete performance profile. Coaches should examine reaction time, 10m splits, velocity trace, step length, step frequency and deceleration rather than explaining the result through motivation alone.
  6. Prepare for the advancement rule. The athlete must know whether position or time is decisive and race the entire 100m accordingly.

Disappointment Should Not Erase the National Record

The Glasgow result should be criticized honestly, but it should not be used to pretend the 10.09 never happened. Singh achieved something no Indian man had achieved before him. That performance remains part of the national record book.

The correct conclusion is more demanding: Indian sprinting has reached a level where merely setting a national record is no longer the end of the story. The next stage is learning to carry national-record ability into global and Commonwealth competition.
