Canada’s Grace Fetherstonhaugh delivered a courageous personal-best performance to finish sixth in the women’s 3000m steeplechase final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Fetherstonhaugh crossed the line in 9:27.49, finishing only 0.74 seconds behind India’s Parul Chaudhary.

Canada’s second finalist, Katelyn Stewart-Barnett, placed ninth in 9:47.00.

The Canadians began toward the back of a rapidly stretching field as Kenya and Uganda established a severe early pace. Much of the final developed into a single-file train.

Grace Fetherstonhaugh runs a personal best Fetherstonhaugh finished sixth in 9:27.49, while Stewart-Barnett placed ninth in 9:47.00. Canada did not reach the medals, but Fetherstonhaugh produced her best performance when the championship pressure was greatest.

Canadian Results

Sixth place ???????? Grace Fetherstonhaugh 9:27.49 PB

Fetherstonhaugh ran bravely through the chase pack and closed to within less than one second of fifth place.

Ninth place ???????? Katelyn Stewart-Barnett 9:47.00

Stewart-Barnett completed the final ahead of Scotland’s Sarah Tait but was unable to remain with the primary chasing group.

Canadians Forced to Chase From the Beginning

Kenya and Uganda moved to the front immediately and forced the race into a line. The first kilometre was covered in approximately 2:55, placing enormous pressure on every athlete outside the medal group.

The Canadians began toward the rear and were forced to negotiate the race as chasers rather than contenders controlling their own pace.

Fetherstonhaugh remained patient enough to avoid complete collapse and gradually moved into sixth. Her result was particularly encouraging because she produced a personal best under championship conditions.

ITC Performance Analysis

Fetherstonhaugh Delivered Under Pressure

Running a personal best in a championship final is significant. The race was not paced evenly, and the early speed forced every athlete to make immediate tactical decisions.

Fetherstonhaugh remained composed enough to complete the race faster than she had ever run before.

The Gap to the Medal Standard Remains Large

Fetherstonhaugh’s personal best was still 17.53 seconds behind the bronze-medal time of 9:09.96.

This does not diminish her achievement, but it clearly identifies the scale of improvement required for Canada to contend for international steeplechase medals.

Canada Needs Greater Early-Pace Resilience

The first kilometre separated the medal contenders from the chasing field. Canadian athletes must become more comfortable operating near international pace without losing barrier efficiency.

That requires stronger aerobic power, better speed reserve and the ability to clear barriers economically while running under severe physiological pressure.

Stewart-Barnett Was Unable to Reconnect

Stewart-Barnett became detached from the main chasing group and finished ninth. Once the field stretched into single file, the gaps became increasingly difficult to close.

In a race with repeated barriers, athletes cannot simply surge back as easily as they might in a flat event. Every clearance adds another technical cost.

Canada’s key result: Grace Fetherstonhaugh did not win a medal, but she produced a brave personal best in a championship final. Canada now needs to build on performances like this and reduce the substantial gap to the medal-winning international standard.

A Brave PB, but Canada Must Keep Advancing

Fetherstonhaugh’s sixth-place finish deserves recognition because she improved her personal best when the race demanded courage and technical discipline.

Canada placed two athletes in the final, which reflects meaningful national depth.

However, the medal positions were established at a significantly higher performance level. The winning time was 9:01.76, and bronze required 9:09.96.

Canada’s next challenge is to convert final appearances and personal bests into athletes capable of remaining with the leaders through a sub-three-minute opening kilometre.
