Kenya completed a clean sweep of the men’s 3000-metre steeplechase podium at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games , while Canadians Jean-Simon Desgagnés and Aaron Ahl delivered a pair of top-six finishes at Scotstoun Stadium.

The race began with a strong Canadian presence at the front. Ahl moved directly into the lead and took the field through the opening lap, with Desgagnés positioned immediately behind his teammate.

Canada therefore occupied the first two positions during the early stages of the final before Kenya’s three medal contenders moved forward and established control of the race.

Kenya captures gold, silver and bronze

Edmund Serem won the Commonwealth Games title in 8:18.23, narrowly defeating Simon Kiprop Koech, who earned silver in 8:18.59. Leonard Kipkemoi Bett completed the Kenyan clean sweep with bronze in 8:21.63.

Canadian Results: Desgagnés Fifth and Ahl Sixth

Canada placed both of its finalists among the top six. Desgagnés finished fifth in 8:25.43, while Ahl followed in sixth place with a time of 8:31.71.

Fifth place ???????? Jean-Simon Desgagnés 8:25.43

Desgagnés remained close to the medal contest and finished only 1.34 seconds behind New Zealand’s fourth-place finisher, Geordie Beamish.

Sixth place ???????? Aaron Ahl 8:31.71

Ahl led the opening lap, established the initial tempo and completed the race as Canada’s second athlete inside the top six.

Aaron Ahl Leads the Opening Lap

Ahl did not wait for the Kenyan favourites to dictate the final. The Canadian moved confidently to the front and assumed responsibility for the early pace.

Desgagnés settled immediately behind Ahl, briefly placing the two Canadian athletes first and second in a Commonwealth Games final containing three powerful Kenyan contenders.

The decision to race near the front offered a technical advantage. Steeplechase athletes leading the field have an unobstructed view of each barrier and can establish their preferred takeoff pattern without reacting to sudden changes in stride from athletes ahead.

It also required Ahl to perform the work of setting the pace. The athletes behind him could remain patient, observe the opening rhythm and prepare their moves for the more decisive stages of the race.

Kenya Takes Control of the Final

Kenya’s three finalists remained composed behind the early Canadian leaders before moving toward the front as the race progressed.

Serem, Koech and Bett eventually occupied all three medal positions, turning the final into another demonstration of Kenya’s extraordinary depth in the steeplechase.

Serem secured gold in 8:18.23, but the victory was not comfortable. Koech finished only 0.36 seconds behind him in 8:18.59.

Bett crossed the line in 8:21.63 to claim bronze and complete the Kenyan sweep. New Zealand’s Geordie Beamish was the closest athlete to breaking the Kenyan podium, finishing fourth in 8:24.09.

ITC Performance Analysis

Canada Chose Position Over Passivity

Ahl and Desgagnés did not approach the final passively. Their early positioning showed a deliberate attempt to stay clear of traffic, control their approaches to the barriers and influence the rhythm of the race.

In a tightly packed steeplechase field, athletes running behind others can lose momentum when the runners ahead shorten their strides or hesitate before a barrier. Ahl’s position at the front removed that uncertainty during the opening phase.

Kenya Had a Powerful Numerical Advantage

Kenya’s tactical strength was not limited to one race favourite. Serem, Koech and Bett were all capable of contending for medals, allowing the Kenyan team to respond collectively to the changing pace.

No single Kenyan athlete needed to cover every early move. Once the trio advanced toward the front, they were able to sustain pressure through the final laps and secure every podium position.

Barrier Efficiency Became Decisive Under Fatigue

The final stages of a steeplechase test more than aerobic fitness. Athletes must maintain posture, hip height, takeoff accuracy and landing control while fatigue increasingly affects coordination.

Small technical losses at each barrier can accumulate. A hesitation, an unnecessarily high jump or a heavy landing can interrupt forward momentum and cost valuable time.

Kenya’s finalists maintained enough speed and technical control to separate from the rest of the field. Desgagnés remained the closest Canadian to the medals, finishing 3.80 seconds behind Bett’s bronze-medal time.

Canadian takeaway: Canada placed two athletes inside the top six of a Commonwealth Games steeplechase final. Desgagnés finished fifth in 8:25.43, while Ahl combined an aggressive opening-lap lead with a sixth-place finish in 8:31.71.

Two Top-Six Finishes for Canada

Although Canada did not reach the podium, placing both finalists among the first six represented a strong collective result.

Desgagnés finished only 1.34 seconds behind Beamish in fourth and 3.80 seconds behind the bronze medal. Ahl followed in sixth after playing a major role in shaping the opening phase of the race.

Their performances ensured that Canada was visible both at the front of the early contest and near the top of the final standings.
