By Harpreet Sandhu, ChPC ITC.International Glasgow, Scotland

Sarvesh Anil Kushare created a new chapter in Indian athletics by winning the men’s high jump silver medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Kushare cleared 2.25 metres at Scotstoun Stadium to deliver India’s best-ever Commonwealth Games result in the men’s high jump. He matched the winning height but was placed second on countback behind Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford.

Beckford also cleared 2.25m and secured gold through the superior series of attempts. England’s Kimani Jack won bronze with a clearance of 2.20m.

Congratulations are due to Beckford for delivering Jamaica another Commonwealth title and to Kushare for turning years of persistence into a landmark silver medal for India.

Historic silver for India

Kushare’s 2.25m clearance improves India’s Commonwealth Games men’s high jump history from Tejaswin Shankar’s 2022 bronze to a first silver medal and the country’s highest finish in the event.

Sarvesh Kushare Delivers India’s Best Commonwealth High Jump Result

????
???????? Sarvesh Anil Kushare 2.25m — Silver

Kushare matched the winning height and finished second only because Beckford held the superior countback record.

Kushare entered the competition carrying both expectation and genuine medal potential. Rather than allowing the occasion to disrupt his approach, he progressed through the earlier heights with control and remained one of the strongest athletes as the field narrowed.

His clearance at 2.25m placed him level with Beckford at the top of the competition. In high jump, however, equal final heights do not automatically produce a tie. The number of failures at the decisive height and earlier stages determines the order.

Beckford’s cleaner countback gave him gold, but Kushare’s silver remains a historic achievement. No Indian man had previously finished higher than third in a Commonwealth Games high jump final.

Romaine Beckford Wins Gold for Jamaica

Beckford entered Glasgow as one of the leading international jumpers in the field and delivered when the title was decided.

His winning clearance of 2.25m matched Kushare’s best, making every earlier attempt important. Beckford’s superior countback became the difference between gold and silver.

Championship high jump is not determined only by the highest bar cleared. Efficiency throughout the competition matters. Every first-attempt clearance preserves energy, reduces psychological pressure and protects an athlete in a possible countback.

Beckford managed that element of the final effectively enough to become Commonwealth champion. Jamaica can celebrate a technically disciplined victory alongside the raw quality required to clear 2.25m under championship pressure.

The Competition Tightens at 2.20 Metres

The medal contest became increasingly selective as the bar reached 2.20m.

Kushare, Beckford, Jack and Jamaica’s Raymond Richards remained in contention, while several experienced challengers were eliminated.

Jack and Richards both cleared 2.20m, but countback again became decisive. Jack took the bronze medal, while Richards was placed fourth.

India’s Aadarsh Ram Jothi Shankar finished fifth with 2.15m, giving India two athletes among the top five. The Bahamas’ veteran Donald Thomas and Australia’s Yual Reath followed with clearances of 2.10m.

Birmingham 2022 Tejaswin Shankar wins India’s first medal

Shankar cleared 2.22m to win bronze, becoming the first Indian athlete to reach the Commonwealth Games men’s high jump podium.

Glasgow 2026 Sarvesh Kushare raises the standard to silver

Kushare cleared 2.25m to become India’s first silver medallist and highest-ever finisher in the event.

The progression from Shankar’s breakthrough bronze to Kushare’s silver represents a significant development for Indian jumping.

India is no longer celebrating merely reaching a Commonwealth final. Its leading high jumpers are now entering major championships with a realistic ability to challenge for gold.

Remembering Gurbachan Singh Randhawa’s Place in Indian Athletics

India’s athletics history extends far beyond the medal tables of one event. One of its great pioneers was Gurbachan Singh Randhawa, an exceptional multi-event athlete whose career included the high jump, hurdles and decathlon.

Randhawa did not win a Commonwealth Games medal, but his wider achievements were extraordinary. He won the decathlon gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games and later placed fifth in the 110m hurdles final at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.

His versatility is especially relevant when discussing the development of Indian high jump. He represented an era when one athlete developed proficiency across numerous disciplines—including sprinting, hurdles, jumping and throwing—often without the specialist systems available to modern competitors.

ITC Performance Analysis

Countback Made Every Attempt Important

Kushare and Beckford both reached 2.25m, but high jump rewards the cleanest overall competition rather than simply the final successful height.

A missed attempt has both physical and tactical consequences. It costs energy, increases tension and can later determine the medal order.

Beckford’s countback advantage gave him gold. Kushare’s silver, however, confirmed that his maximum competitive level was equal to the champion’s on the night.

Kushare Remained Technically Stable Under Pressure

A championship final requires an athlete to reproduce the same approach rhythm across changing heights, longer pauses and increasing emotional pressure.

The high jumper must control the curve of the approach, maintain speed without rushing, establish an effective penultimate step and convert horizontal velocity into vertical lift at takeoff.

Kushare remained stable enough to clear 2.25m when the medals were being decided. That is the defining quality of his performance.

The Medal Was Won Below Kushare’s Absolute Best

Kushare entered Glasgow after raising India’s national record to 2.31m. His silver-medal clearance was therefore below his maximum ability, but championship performance is not a personal-best contest.

The athlete must manage the conditions, competition order, recovery between jumps and psychological pressure of elimination.

Kushare did enough to place himself level with the winning height. That demonstrates competitive maturity rather than any failure to reproduce his national record.

India’s Depth Was Visible Beyond the Medal

Aadarsh Ram’s fifth-place finish at 2.15m gave India two athletes in the top five.

That result matters for the national programme. A single medallist can be exceptional; two high finishers suggest increasing depth and a broader competitive standard.

Key Indian takeaway: Tejaswin Shankar opened India’s Commonwealth Games men’s high jump medal history with bronze in 2022. Four years later, Sarvesh Kushare raised that standard to silver and matched the champion’s 2.25m height.

Congratulations to Jamaica and India

Romaine Beckford deserves full congratulations for delivering a championship victory under pressure. His efficient series and 2.25m clearance earned Jamaica the gold medal.

Sarvesh Kushare deserves equal admiration for producing India’s greatest Commonwealth Games men’s high jump result.

The final should be remembered not simply as a countback victory and a silver medal, but as a contest in which two athletes from Jamaica and India reached the same decisive height and pushed the event to its tactical limit.

For India, the result is both a celebration and a challenge. Silver confirms that an Indian high jumper can stand beside the Commonwealth champion. The next step is gold.
