World Athletics Indoor Championships 2028 Are Coming to Odisha, India
From 3–5 March 2028, the world’s leading indoor track and field athletes will compete at Kalinga Indoor Stadium in Bhubaneswar—marking India’s first global track and field championship.

Odisha will become the centre of the indoor athletics world in March 2028. World Athletics has officially awarded the World Athletics Indoor Championships to the eastern Indian state, with the competition scheduled for Kalinga Indoor Stadium in Bhubaneswar from 3 to 5 March.

What Has World Athletics Officially Confirmed?
World Athletics announced in March 2026 that Odisha had been selected to host the 2028 World Athletics Indoor Championships. The championship is scheduled for 3–5 March 2028 at Kalinga Indoor Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
The decision means India will host a global track and field championship for the first time. Odisha had already demonstrated international hosting experience through the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships and other major sporting events, but World Indoors 2028 represents a much larger global milestone.

Inside the Kalinga Indoor Athletics Centre
The Government of Odisha describes the facility as South Asia’s largest indoor athletics centre. Its main competition area contains a World Athletics-certified 200-metre Mondo synthetic track, together with an 80-metre plus 20-metre sprint straight.
Dedicated areas are provided for the long jump, triple jump, pole vault and shot put. The venue has received World Athletics Category 1 certification, indicating that it meets the technical standards required for high-level competition and record recognition.
Integrated residential and dining facilities can accommodate more than 100 athletes. That allows the centre to function not only as a championship stadium but also as a permanent high-performance training environment for Indian athletes and national camps.

What Events Will Be Contested at World Indoors 2028?
The final timetable and qualification standards will be released closer to the championship. Based on the established World Indoor Championships programme, spectators can expect a concentrated schedule of sprinting, middle-distance racing, relays, hurdles, jumping, throwing and combined events.
The 60 metres and 60-metre hurdles are among the fastest and most explosive events in global athletics.
The 800m, 1500m and 3000m typically produce tactical races, close finishes and dramatic championship decisions.

A Personal Memory of Bhubaneswar
My connection with Odisha began long before Bhubaneswar became known as an international sporting destination.
Nearly 40 years ago, a young man named Rajesh from Bhubaneswar worked in my grandfather’s business. We never treated him merely as an employee. To us, he was part of the family. He was a wonderful young man, and even today I often wonder where life took him.

International and domestic visitors can use the championship as the centre of a wider Odisha itinerary. Puri is roughly 65–70 kilometres by road from the Kalinga Stadium area, although travel time depends on traffic and local conditions.

Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri
Shree Jagannath Temple is the spiritual heart of Puri and one of India’s most important pilgrimage centres. Odisha Tourism dates the monumental temple principally to the 12th century.
The principal deities are Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. The temple remains a living centre of worship, ritual, music, offerings, pilgrimage and craftsmanship.
Rath Yatra
During the world-famous Rath Yatra, the deities are brought from the temple and placed upon monumental wooden chariots that travel along Puri’s Grand Road toward Gundicha Temple.
The festival communicates a powerful idea: the deities leave the inner sanctuary and come before the people.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Connection With Puri
Sikh tradition records that Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited Puri during his eastern journey. The visit is associated with the hymn commonly known as Gagan Mein Thaal, in which the whole universe becomes an act of aarti.
The sky becomes the ceremonial plate, the sun and moon become lamps, and the stars appear like pearls. Gurudwara Aarti Sahib in Puri commemorates this spiritual connection.
