Colombia’s Anthony Jose Zambrano (clocked 44.51)is not only Tokyo bound but also closer to the podium finish at Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He confirms his place by defeating defending Olympic Champion Wayde Van Niekerk in a stunning race at World Athletic’s Silver meet at Madrid today. The progress of Zambrano cannot be overlooked. He is on a winning streak including a diamond league win this season.

After recovering from a knee injury, this race was Wayde Van Niekerk’s (44.56) first international race in his Forte event, 400 meters. Before this race, last month, Wayde was seen losing to Canada’s Jerome Blake in a 200m event at Adidas Boston Games in May.

With Fred Kerly moving down to the 100m and 200m, Wayde Van Niekerk and Kirani James seemingly not in a form of 43 low, La Shawn Merrit out in round one of USATF’s Olympic Trials, the field seems to be open for an opportunity. Would Zambrano be able to turn his Doha World Championship Silver into Tokyo Olympics Gold? Only time will tell.
