Who will win the Javelin throw final at Tokyo 2020, Japan Olympics?

This question is circulating in the Track and Field circle more than ever that who will win the Javelin Gold medal at Tokyo Olympics? With all the countries’ “Aces” of Javelin, vying for a medal at the Olympics; And some of these countries have never won an Olympic medal. If Thomas Röhler and Magnus Kirt were healthier and competing, then the debate probably would have been that whom of these three, Kirt, Röhler, and Vetter would win the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. With the equation changed in the field, two questions arise, first is, whether any of the other “Aces” can medal at the Olympics and who holds the national record for javelin throw and will complete at Tokyo Olympics 2020 for respective countries? Let’s explore.

Why will Johannes Vetter win Men’s Javelin Throw Final competition at Olympics?

Lets put our patriotism(s) to the side and look at the facts :

A thrower as consistent as Johannes Vetter, oh wait, you saw an eighty-five meters throw from him and became instantly doubtful of his unbeaten streak over the last few years? No problem. Let’s walk together a probable 100 meters long German Javelin park in Tokyo 2020 Olympic Stadium. Just so you know, the actual park distance is 104.80 meters in length and that is also a German park owned by Uwe Hohn. Frankly speaking, Germany has had a stronghold on Javelin for the last few decades with a few exceptions of Julius Yego , Anderson Peters , Marcin Krukowski, and more.

Vetter has proved himself to be the best in the world by throwing 90 meters plus on multiple occasions since 2020 and most of the 2021 Track and Field season. In the absence of Thomas Röhler and Magnus Kirt, there isn’t much challenge from the talented field of Javelin throwers at this year’s edition of the Olympics.

But why is that?

Because almost none of the throwers in the current pool have ever thrown the Javelin over 90 meters. Magnus Kirt would have been a factor but he is out due to an injury and so is Thomas Röhler. Those who have come close to 90 meters this season are, Keshorn Walcott and Marcin Krukowski. Being said that Johannes Vetter seems to be close to his goal of becoming an Olympic Champion provided the “conditions” are right.

Who may win the Silver Medal at the Olympics and Why?

Track and field competitions at the biggest stage of the Olympics not only require physical preparation but also mental toughness.

International diamond leagues are a better predictor of performance than the small European circuit for almost any event. Marcin Krukowski and Keshorn Walcott have shown some promising results with consistency to be medal contenders. Their performances are definitely world-class but nowhere close to beating Johannes Vetter in the same turn and conditions. If Vetter is performing 92m+, others are performing at 89+ and 89 meters are a better throw than the National records of some supposedly “medal contenders”. For this reason, Krukowski and Walcott are in a good position to claim some hardware.

Who may win the Bronze Medal at the Olympics and Why?

Don’t forget about Julius Yego and Anderson Peters and for the medals of any color except the Gold medal. Peters and Yego both may be ready on time but their 2021 track record trajectory isn’t up to the mark so any of the above, can be a medal winner at Tokyo.
