The new rules about athletic shoes from World Athletics put a cap on the size of the sole, use of sensors or technology from January 01, 2022.

In recent years, marathon running shoes have seen the sole thickness of up to 40mm and normal running shoes with the thickness of 20-25mm. The thick soles have stirred debates in the running community whether the improved performance of marathon runners is due to the shoe thickness, fiber plates, and design.

The new rules defined by World Athletics state that the sole thicknesses for all athletic shoes in track and field events will be simplified to a stack height of 20mm from November 1st, 2024. According to World Athletics, the timeline gives the shoe manufacturers enough time to adapt to the new regulations without harming the investments made in the previous designs.

World Athletics’ Chief Executive Jon Ridgeon said in a statement, “There has been an enormous amount of background work and meetings held both internally and externally on our shoe rules since the inception of the Working Group on Athletic Shoes in June 2020”.
